An Exoplanet - Wolf 503b, that_is twice the Size_of Earth_was discovered_by the_AstronomersAn exoplanet that was twice the size of Earth was discovered by an International Astronomers team using data from NASA’s Kepler Space Telescope and this was described in a study led by Merrin Peterson, who just started her master’s degree at the Institute for Research on Exoplanets at Universite de Montreal (UdeM). The distance between the Wolf 503b and Earth is about 145 light years in the Virgo constellation and where it orbits its star 10 times closer to the sun than Mercury.

Peterson also said that “The discovery and confirmation of this new exoplanet seem rapid that we are able to quickly analyze the new data found with many many interesting features”. In the study the team identified the periodic dips that appear in the light curve of a star when the planet travels in front of it in order to highly distinguish the star and planet where the astronomers first found a spectrum of the host star at the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility and then confirmed that the star is an old ‘orange dwarf’,
She also mentioned that the Wolf503b is interesting because of its size, where we have to thank Kepler telescope for this. “Wolf 503b is only planets with a radius near the gap consisting of a star that is bright enough to emit light, it also provides a key opportunity to study about the radius gap.

The second reason found to be interesting about this planet Wolf 503b system is that the star of it is very relatively close to the earth. As we all know that, the more massive planet will have a greater gravitational force on its star, and the variation in the velocity of the star will be eminent. The size and mass of the planet report specified by Kepler’s observations gives the bulk density of the planet, which in turn describes us something about its composition.

Wolf 503b will also be a key target for the upcoming James Webb Space Telescope for its brightness. The chemical content of the planet’s atmosphere can be studied by deploying a technique called transit spectroscopy where it will be possible to detect the presence of molecules like hydrogen and water on the Exoplanet which becomes a crucial factor.

She concluded the statement mentioning that “We’ll understand more about the structure of planets and their radius gap about the diversity of exoplanets present in our galaxy by investigating the nature of Wolf 503b.
