Implementation of AI (Artificial Intelligence) for taking Deep Sea Images

Implementation_of AI_(Artificial Intelligence) for_taking_Deep_Sea_ImagesVery large amounts of data are being evaluated that becomes increasingly relevant in ocean research. Underwater vehicles and autonomous vehicles which carry out measurements independently in the deep sea, can now take large quantities of high-resolution images
Dr. Timm Schoening associate of the “Deep Sea Monitoring” working group that was headed by Prof. Dr. Jens Greinert at GEOMAR stated that “Over the past three years, we had developed a standardized workflow that will make it possible to scientifically evaluate large amounts of image data and processing outputs”.
Here, the procedure is divided into three steps namely: Data acquisition, data curation, and data management where each of which is defined as intermediate steps that should be completed. In this technique “The information that is available here has to attach and interlinked with the respective image as it provides crucial information for all subsequent evaluation. Now, all these processes are being automated. However, a large number of time-consuming steps had to be followed and now by using these AI, it can be compatible even with other AUVs or camera systems.
Finally, with the implementation of artificial intelligence in the form of the specially developed algorithm called “CoMoNoD” was deployed for the evaluation at GEOMAR where it automatically records whether manganese nodules are available in a photo or not including the size and weight. The next expedition of the spring next year in the direction of manganese nodules.
