Power9 Chip From Will Make Servers Blazing Fast

Power9chipIn 2011 the Watson supercomputer outsmarted the humans in the game of Jeopardy thanks to the IBM’s power processor. And now for blazing speed and technologies never been seen in chip before the company is developing a new chip in the lineup known as Power9. At the Hot Chips conference in Cupertino, California IBM is going to announce this chip.

It is anticipated that the Power9 will make the supercomputers even smarter and virtually unbeatable. To speed up complex calculations the Power9 architecture has been provided with 24 cores. The range of connectors available in this chip to connect the GPUs, Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs), and Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) is really the cool part. In order to run tasks like cognitive computing, database, visual computing and hyper scale web serving will be a breeze with these coprocessors.

IBM intends to put these chips in the homegrown servers which cost more than $6,000. Although low priced Power9 servers are expected from third party markets. Intel’s x86 chips which are targeting the server market right now is the main target of the company. With support of UNIX and Linux users can expect Power9 servers somewhere in mid-2017. Power9 is the first chip to incorporate PCI-E 4.0 which provide a bandwidth of 16 Gigatransfers per second.
