With the end of July, Pentagon has announced a change in conducting background investigations for the reduction of huge backlogs for all the people waiting for their government clearance. There are plans to conduct reinvestigations in a decreasing level with the official process stretching from five to six years but when comes to unground situations there is no much work carried in reality. This may fill up many government security lists, it is still behind in its initial investigations, and it is a partial solution but the best at the moment.

The government organizations are all set to explore other options in fixing the clearance process. This can be supported with the White House ready to reorganize their agencies performance and help in the clearance of investigations. Even The Senate Intelligence Committee has approved the Intelligence Authorization Act for taking measures in the promotion of information that is shared between federal agencies government organizations and their widespread policies for granting interim clearances. Pilot programs are also in the process of agreeing to move slow and labour-intensive process to the corporates data-mining software to help issues in real time to be solved as quick as possible.

Key decision-makers of Pentagon have to understand that machine learning is a tool that investigators use for making clearance decisions by flagging risk factors for further evaluation before making a final determination. Machine Learning tools do not only include trusting AI robots for critical national security rulings and drafting but is also helpful in flagging risks pertaining to human evaluation.

With the outdated clearance process being inefficient and also costing millions of dollars to its taxpayers, it is also creating a hindrance by preventing qualified candidates to perform in critical national security operations. On a more serious note, the manual process of conducting investigations is known to have less or no follow-up for years. It is very ineffective at identifying potential issues compared to the automated process which takes only minutes to process and update information and latest statistical information.

The security clearance backlog is a crisis that has to be mended, right now. The govt. and citizens can’t afford to waste few more years in reorganizing and pilot programs.
