With backing from Andreessen Horowitz, Mark Zuckerberg and Pierre Omidyar the since its founding in 2014 the San Francisco startup has opened eight of its new-age AltSchool in the New York and Bay Area. The company is using these as mini educational labs where they are working to create a new kind of personalized education for the 21st century. The company has now started to share its philosophy with the outside world.

- Temple Beth Sholom Day School in Miami Beach, Florida
- Berthold Academy in Reston, Virginia
The three new outside schools will use its platform announced the AltSchool.
Applying the company’s formula across the network of public, private and charter schools throughout the country. The three independent AltSchools use a wide range of educational methods, from Reggio Emilia to Montessori, but Johnson believes they can all merge with the AltSchool ethos. He said they are independent and private but they have the capability of incorporating this platform into their external environment. The software provided to these schools also comes with more details from the company. Software like the Portrait for maintaining the record of each student and Playlist that will aid educators to remix and sequence curriculum are helpful for the educators.
