World’s first 8GB LPDDR4 (Low Power, Double Data Rate) DRAM package has been announced by Samsung today. This new package will have twice of both speed and capacity of the currently in use DRAMs in PCs. 10 nanometer-class process technology has been used in this new package. The dimension of this DRAM is 15nm x 15nm x 1.0nm. The company is planning to expand its 10nm process technology across all its fabrication plants. Samsung’s new 8GB LPDDR4 DRAM package will aid the next generation mobile devices to take benefit of its extremely high capacity while much high-end are currently using 8GB of DRAM.
The new package is capable of attending 4266 Mbps, which is twice that of the previous version. This also enables the smoother 4K UHD video playback & virtual machine operation that has been a popular feature of many high-end PCs. Samsung has used four of the company’s 16Gb LPDDR4 memory chips for the 8GB mobile DRAM. This can transmit over 34Gbs of per second assuming a 64-bit wide memory bus said the company in a statement.
After only a 14 month development period the company has released a 12GB LPDDR4 DRAM in August last year.
