$11.6 Million Investment of Homeland Security to Counter Large-Scale Internet Outages

$11.6 _Million_ Investment _of_ Homeland_ Security_ to_ Counter_ Large-Scale_ Internet_ OutagesGrants now focusing on the effect outages on critical infrastructure the Homeland Security Department’s Science and Technology Directorate is awarded $11.6 million in the form of grants on Friday. The organization is focused on protecting against massive disruptions to internet connectivity that leads to a knockoff in critical infrastructures such as hospitals and energy plants offline.
In addition to improvising public understanding towards network/internet-scale disruptive events or NIDEs, the research will have direct implications for the Federal Communications Commission and the emergency communications wing of Homeland Security. This is a special focus on cybersecurity and infrastructure security division, according to statements. They also stated that despite the impact of NIDEs there is still a lack of understanding of internet outages or sufficient tools for systemic and timely identification.
The grants will include $3 million to the University of California, San Diego’s Center towards Applied Internet Data Analysis which is focused on real-time detection of internet connectivity disruptions and $1.9 million towards the San Antonio company SecureLogix for focusing in making 911 systems and other public safety communications more secure against internet outages.
Just to memorize-The grants are part of the science and technology divisions are newly established to Predict, Assess Risk, Identify (and Mitigate) Disruptive Internet-Scale Network Events, or PARADINE in programs.
